What it is

City liens for unpaid water and sewer bills. In this portal they sit inside the LIEN type, not in their own type.

Why it matters

An unpaid water bill can mean an empty house or an owner in money trouble.

The fields you get

  • Doc number
  • Doc recorded
  • 1st grantor
  • 1st grantee
  • PIN
  • Address
  • Lien amount (in the document)

The page shows a Documents Indexed Through date. It was about three weeks behind when we checked.

Follow these 8 steps

  1. Open the Cook County Advanced Search

Go to the Clerk Recordings Advanced Search. Note the Documents Indexed Through date.

  3. Enter the dates

Click From Date and type the digits only, such as 10012026. The slashes fill in. Do the same for To Date. Do not go past the indexed date.

  4. Run the search

Click Search at the bottom of the panel. The total shows next to Total Documents.
  5. Sort by who filed it

Click 1st Grantor. Names sort A to Z. There are 100 rows per page, so check the next pages too.

  6. Keep the city rows

Keep rows where the Grantor is a city or village, such as CITY OF CHICAGO HTS. Skip condo associations and COUNTY OF COOK.

  7. Open the record

Click View. The page shows the address and parties. Click View Document in New Window to read the free unofficial copy.

  8. Keep the water liens

Read the title and the first lines of the copy. The one we opened said NOTICE OF LIEN [WATER] and named water/sewer services and the amount. Copy those into your spreadsheet.

Watch out for these

  • The index runs behind. On 5 November it said Documents Indexed Through 10-15-2026. Newer recordings will not show yet.
  • Type dates as digits only. If you type too fast or add slashes, the date can break and you get an error that the date cannot be empty.
  • You do not need Buy Search Result or the cart. Those are paid options.
  • You must open the document to know it is a water lien. The results list only says LIEN.
