What it is

Building violations issued by the Chicago Department of Buildings. This covers the City of Chicago only, not all of Cook County.

Why it matters

Open violations can point to a run-down house and a tired owner.

The fields you get

  • ID
  • Violation date
  • Violation code
  • Violation status
  • Violation description
  • Inspector comments
  • Address

The page shows a Last Updated date. The newest violation was one day older than that date when we checked.

Watch out for these

  • There is no owner name in the file. You need another source for that.
  • One inspection can have many violation rows, so the same address can repeat.
  • Choose VIOLATION STATUS, not VIOLATION STATUS DATE. They sit next to each other in the list.
  • The city says this data is historical and should not be relied on for closings.
